How to Improve Your Breathing for Outdoor Activities

Spring has arrived, and it's time to enjoy the great outdoors! If you're planning on hiking or running, you might find that breathing can be challenging. But don't let that hold you back from enjoying your favorite activities! As a myofunctional therapist and Buteyko breathing practitioner, I'm here to help you improve your breathing and make your outdoor adventures more enjoyable.

Here are some tips to help you improve your breathing for hiking and running:

Breathe through your nose

Your nose is an amazing tool that filters, warms, and humidifies the air you breathe, making it easier for your lungs to absorb oxygen. Not only that, but it can also help reduce the risk of respiratory infections. So, breathe through your nose as much as possible when you're out and about.

Use your diaphragm

Your diaphragm is the primary muscle responsible for breathing. By breathing with your diaphragm, you can increase your breathing efficiency and reduce the risk of hyperventilation. To breathe with your diaphragm, inhale slowly and deeply, allowing your abdomen to expand. Then exhale slowly, letting your abdomen deflate.

Improve your posture

Standing tall with your shoulders back and your chest open allows your lungs to expand fully and improves oxygen flow. So, avoid slouching or leaning forward when you're hiking or running. Good posture can make all the difference!

Take breaks

If you feel short of breath during your outdoor activity, don't hesitate to take a break. Stop and rest for a few moments, focusing on your breathing and allowing your body to recover. This can help you avoid overexertion and prevent shortness of breath.

Consider myofunctional therapy or Buteyko breathing coaching

If you're struggling with breathing during outdoor activities or would like to improve your overall breathing efficiency, consider myofunctional therapy or Buteyko breathing coaching. These techniques can help you reduce snoring and sleep apnea, improve your breathing, and increase your overall health and well-being.

Don't let breathing difficulties keep you from enjoying the great outdoors! Follow these tips and take a deep breath of fresh air.
